Mastodon

ALL new authors and publishing companies out there must establish themselves a presence on social media platforms. Each one has its own strengths and weaknesses. They each have their own strategies for getting your money and to get more people to join in on their platform so they can sell more advertisements. Which is really where they make their millions and billions. However, for now, that is how people find other people, businesses, books to read, music to listen to, and arts and crafts they want to buy. For some reason, you have to have a different channel for each type of business that you offer.

On each of the platforms that we participate in we try to stick to one theme. For Southern Dragon Publishing we creates posts of graphics and videos that center on getting published, supporting other others, some digital marketing techniques and the trials and tributions of being an indie published author.

FACEBOOK PAGES
We have several public business pages we have created and maintain for Southern Dragon Publishing as we as the editor/author/website designer Jolene MacFadden. Facebook has been around for quite a number of years and mostly appeals to older individuals through polls, written posts, short-form videos and photos set to music about the writing life, specials, events and joining in on Facebook groups.
You can Like, Comment, Share and Subscribe (follow) other pages to help you increase your own brand awareness.

INSTAGRAM
Instagram is really a photo and short-form video sharing platform. It relies heavily on hashtags to sort out which posts each of the views sees. Generally, you need to post regulary and consistently to build-up your followers and finally get some interaction. THey do not allow clickable links in their descriptions but you can take advantage of the “@YourFavAuthor” tagging function to share you posts on other posters pages. There isn’s any sharing of posts online Liking and Commenting.

YOUTUBE

YouTube is an every evolving platform that started out and continues to be a place to post longer form videos. Recently, they have been branching out with short-form videos, podcasting and a tab called “Community” where you can posts photographs, polls, type written updates and share videos you found intriguing. To make headway on this platform you need to remember to tell each viewer to “Like, Share, Comment and Subscribe” The more subscribers you get as well as the more comments and shares the more your particular videos will get pushed out.

TWITTER PAGE
Twitter or “X” as it is now called is still around. There have been some mass exoduses from authors and other groups but I keep the account active and share posts from my website and other places just in case. I only keep the one X account now.

PINTEREST
From everything I have read and viewed about this platform it is considered mostly a pictorial search engine. You can pin others posts into folders you have created that have descriptive names. You can like and comment as well. It has been suggested that you do not use hashtages within your descriptions as they are not really being use but you can add basic tags that may help you get your pins noticed. You can post pictures and short-form videos and even add a clickable link when you create your pins.

TIKTOK
TikTok has been a fast growing platform over the last 3 years. However, as of January 19, 2025 the U.S. Congress have issued legislations the effectively bans the app inside the smartphone stores. The platform has always been a great way to find other authors and readers from around the world, connect with people on a personal level and increase awareness of you as an author. The politics of the thing is disturbing on so many levels. As to the allegations that a “foreign” government will have access to our date and manipulate the public well that has been going on with American companies for YEARS!!! Sounds like a double standard to me. Anyway, it is a fun video centered platform that invites users to create fun, informative, and creative videos, slideshows, long or short form, as well as going “LIVE”.

Mastodon/Bookstodon
Mastodon was first created as an alternative to Twitter. It is a microblogging platform where you can post words, videos, or pictures. You can join separate areas within what is called the Fediverse such as Bookstodon. That was created and maintained by a book lover. The platform is not owned by any one person or business. You can create your own spaces and house them on a server you pay form. It is still in its infancy but growning.

Threads.net
Threads was created by that Facebook guy as an alternative to Twitter as well. It can be connected to your Instagram account and you should be able to share posts from Instagram into Threads. It is a microblogging platform but you cannot schedule any posts nor can you post from with the business section of Facebook. Which is a shame. Scheduling posts on any platform is a great help to busy authors and small businesses.

Bluesky App
The Bluesky app was created in 2024 in response to the great dissatifaction of a vast majority of Twitter (X) users who wanted a microblogging platform that was not filled with politics. Authors and Readers as well as those who enjoy cooking, sharing recipies and other types of hobbies left “X” and are building up their followers once more on a new app that allows you to upload pictures, short-form videos, just text and utilizes hashtags to sort and collect these posts for their users. At this time you cannot schedule posts but you can access the app on your laptop. You can create lists of users to share and follow trending hashtags for your feeds. You can like, comment and repost (either with new comments or without) from other users.
